The best recommended way is the use a dolly especially those made for stair movement in so as to ease the transportation of the safe together with some secure mechanisms of getting the gun safe to the dolly. Either a rope or ratchet strap is good for that work.

  1. Begin from the top of the stairs and ensure that there is one person holding onto the dolly handles.  Also ensure that you have at least other two people on the stairs to tangibly hold and direct your dolly down one step after another.
  1. Secondly, ensure that ease of the dolly wheels after each step. This ensures avoidance of damage of the stairs as well as the risk posed by the gun safe in case of detachment from the dolly as something might happen causing injury to your partners.
  1. Besides having the necessary equipment needed in moving the gun safe, better handling methods as well as practical planning are the other significant considerations for a successful movement process.

It is however, a very bad idea improvising your actions as you progress unless you are experienced in moving safes downstairs. Formulating detailed strategies is there necessary because use of much physical force prove futile when moving a big gun safe.

  1. Lastly, consider the weight and shape of the safe at hand. Items stored may get spoiled because of the uncommon transportation actions subjected to your safe.

A thick moving blanket is ideal around the metal or wooden material of your gun safe. Taping it confidently avoids injury or property loss.
Slant the gun safe carefully to one side and slip the dolly below it and tie the safe with bands as strongly in order to reduce movements.

This unit now comes to rest on the dolly and you may slope it in so as to redistribute excess weight evenly onto the rubber wheels.

In conclusion, many gun safes are extremely heavy and handling them requires attentiveness and care. You can consult a technician in case of complications.

I bought a 26 gun safe at Tractor supply (500lbs). To get the weight down, I took the door off, removed the interior & sheetrock. That got the weight under 200lbs. Then it was basically an empty metal box. Took it upstairs on an appliance dolly by myself. Didn’t even break a sweat. Thing’s not going anywhere now. Before putting the interior back-in I lagged it into the house on all sides with big fender washers. Also upgraded the Electronic Lock with a Nice S&G dial lock I got on eBay for $22. (Black Chrome is an exact match) Spindle shaft is the exact length 2-3/4″ The metal is a little thin, installing the safe where all sides are protected, makes it more difficult for smash & grab thieves to break the safe open.
